Chapter Four
The rain persisted to pound against the little inns rooftop. After breakfast, Harry and Draco silently went back upstairs. Harry was busy packing his knapsack, while Draco became lazy and took a nap. Harry happily thought about leaving Draco behind, if it wasnt for the deal he made with the Slytherin devil. Harry cursed his good heart and his need to hunt down his old Potions professor.
A loud crack of lightening and thunder passed over them as Mrs. Grey unexpectedly burst into the room. She was dragging a large suitcase and tossed it on top of Dracos stomach, waking him up.
I am so sorry, dear, Mrs. Grey sweetly apologized. I didnt see you there.
Whats wrong, Mrs. Grey? Harry asked as she stuffed his knapsack into his suitcase and took out two brown cloth sacks.
Deatheaters, Mrs. Grey said and another clash of thunder lightening rolled by.
Draco sat straight up and was now fully awake.
Muggles dont know anything about Deatheaters, unless-
I am a witch, Mrs. Grey confessed. I am an old acquaintance of Professor Dumbledore and this inn is only visible to those of the wizardry world.
Great! Draco exclaimed. Of all the inns in this town you had to go on and pick the one owned by a old witch.
Shut up! Harry retorted. What do you want us to do, Mrs. Grey?
She handed each one a cloth sack.
I want you to put on this costumes and come downstairs for check out. Mrs. Grey rushed out and left the young men to get dress.
Harry peeked into his bag.
I am not wearing this.
The bells on the front door of the inn rang as two strange men stepped inside from the rain. One of the men was short, lumpy and bold. He was wearing an oversize dingy brown coat with holes and patches. The smell of wet dog and mold was trailing off from him. The man beside him was much taller with shoulder length salt and pepper hair. He had a deep scar that ran from the tip of his forehead all the way down to his jawline. They walked towards the reception desk where Mrs. Grey was attending to a young couple with red hair.
I hope you had a wonderful stay at the inn. Mrs. Grey smiled with a twinkle in her eye. Enjoy the rest of your honeymoon.
The redheaded couple walked past the grumpy looking men, never making eye contact. Then the young woman accidentally tripped on the edge of her dress landing into the arms of the shorter man.
Pardon me, sir, The young woman spoke in a high-pitch squeaky voice.
I do apologize, gentlemen, The young womans husband wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her protectively to his side. My wife is very clumsy due to her poor eyesight.
The young couple strolled into the rain, sharing an umbrella together. The young husband glanced back at the men, keeping his arm around his wife.
The strangers approached the reception desk, glaring down at Mrs. Grey. She did not flinch, but only smiled at them.
Oi, ave you seen a boy with dark air and glasses with a lightening bolt scar, going by the name of arry Potter? The taller man questioned, his strong breath of cigars penetrating Mrs. Greys clean air.
I am sorry, boys, but you have to speak up. Ever since my little potions fiasco back when I was a young girl, I am little hard of hearing. Mrs. Grey said, politely.
E SAID-
Shut it, the taller man slapped the plump fellow. Dont play games with me old ag. Someone said they ave seen im around these parts. Ill ask you one more time. ave you or ave you not seen arry Potter?
No, sir. Mrs. Grey continued to smile. I would have been ecstatic to have Harry Potter in this inn, but sadly the only people staying here was that lovely couple on their honeymoon. They never left their room. Only to eat. Mrs. Grey blushed and giggled.
The plump man joined in her amusement, but stopped when he felt the slap of his comrades hand against his head.
The young redheaded couple leisurely walked into the towns bus station. They sat in the very back, isolated from the other passengers. The bus station was already congested with energetic children, misbehaving and stressing out their chaperones. The young bride glanced out the window toward the inn.
The Death Eaters are leaving, a deep voice came out the young woman, sliding on a pair of glasses.
This wig is itchy. Dracos voice came of the redheaded man. I hate red hair it makes me look poor.
Will you shut up? I am the one that should be complaining. Harry stared at himself in disgust. Look at me. I am wearing a dress.
Thats because nobody will believe someone tall and handsome like me could pass off as a woman. Draco smirked.
Harry scoffed in disgust and continued to look out the window. The Death Eaters were still standing in front of the inn, arguing. The taller Death Eater left his partner and stride in a different direction until Harry lost sight of him. The plump Death Eater leaned up against the iron gates, waiting and eating something he took out of his coat pockets.
Harry needed to think of some way to get out of town before the Death Eaters caught up to their little charade. Harry opened the suitcase and rummaged through the things. The suitcase had been bewitched to store almost anything inside. There were many sets of clothes, packages of food, blankets, a tent, a map, a compass, and an envelope.
We can take the knight bus. Draco suggested.
Are you mad? Harry opened the envelope. We have no money and we could easily get caught. The Death Eaters are probably patrolling every type of magical transportation.
Draco pulled out small a brown sack from his pockets. Then why did Mrs. Grey give us money?
Why did she give it you?
Because I wear the pants in this marriage. Draco laughed at his joke.
You are starting to annoy me more than the dress. Harry pulled a letter from the envelope. Two pairs of tickets fell out of it.
Draco glanced inside the sack, but to his dismay he only found muggle money. He tossed the sack of money onto into the suitcase. Whats the use of having muggle money?
We are going to take the bus. Harry said.
The Knight bus?
Harry and Draco sat in the very back seats of the loud and rowdy bus full of the school children and their chaperones. The adults were having a hard time controlling the children, jumping in their seats, throwing paper airplanes, fighting, and writing on the bus windows. Draco repeatedly banged his head on the window, mumbling to himself with a scowl expression. He hated riding in muggle transportation, especially when its full of children. The children were not the worst part for Harry since he was use to misbehaved children in his old muggle school. The very worst part of the ride for Harry was that he was still wearing the dress.
Harry held on to the letter Mrs. Grey had left them. She instructed Harry and Draco to go to the next town on the bus. The town was partly isolated and most of the people kept to themselves. There was a cabin in the outskirts of town protected with the same charms, just like the Grimmauld Place. Harry and Draco became the new secretkeepers of the cabin. Even though Draco protested on riding the bus, Harry had to remind him of the danger they faced if they ran into a Death Eater or someone else on the Knight bus.
Draco grumbled angrily not paying attention to a paper ball, flying straight at his face. He jumped from his seat, looking for the culprit. Harry pushed him down.
Control yourself, Harry said. They are just children. Didnt you have to deal with the first years when you were a prefect?
Yeah, but they were Slytherins and they feared me. Draco spoke highly about his house and how well behaved they were compared to the other houses and the muggle children.
A little girl with brown pigtails turned around in her seat. She seemed to be five years of age. She gave Draco a big smile, revealing two of her front teeth had fallen out.
Your husband is very handsome, mam. The little girl giggled, shyly.
Draco smiled at her and thanked her for the compliment. Harry just looked away in annoyance. He now hated being around these children, especially the little girls who kept coming up and complimenting on Dracos good looks.
The darkness of sky made the bus seem more quiet and lonely. The school children were dropped off in the previous town, much to the disappointment of most of the little girls and the female chaperones. The bus rocked back and forward. Draco banged his head against the window and woke up. He glanced around the empty bus and felt something heavy on his left side. He saw Harry asleep on his shoulder. Draco stared down at his face and didnt feel a hint of disgust or the urge to knock Harrys head off; very unlike himself.
Harry shook violently as he heard Voldemorts voice in his dreams. He could hear the same words and laughter from the previous nightmare. Then he heard a woman screaming in pain. Harry woke up in a frightful state. He darted his head back and forward in alarm of his new surroundings. Harry searched for his glasses and found them on the floor.
Harry noticed he was not on the bus anymore, but lying on some blankets placed on the floor in a cabin. The fireplace was giving off light and warmness to the cabins living room. He combed his hands through his hair, realizing he was not wearing a wig anymore. Harry looked down at himself, but to his frustration he was still wearing the dress.
Draco entered the living room, carrying a few pieces of firewood in each arm. Finally, you woke up. He said, placing the wood beside the fireplace.
What happened?
You fell asleep, but you didnt want to wake up. I had to carry you and the suitcases off the bus. Draco said with an annoyed attitude. That bus driver was a pervert, telling me to have a good time. If I had my wand, I wouldve cursed that smirk right off his face.
Harry couldnt picture Draco being nice and carrying him in his arms to the cabin.
After the bus left, I dropped you and dragged you by your legs all the way here. Draco put more wood in the fire. I think your wig fell off.
Its true. He couldnt picture Draco being nice. Harry sifted through his hair and found bits of dirt and twigs. I should probably go and get cleaned up.
There are some clothes in your knapsack. I emptied out the suitcase and put some stuff in yours. Then I found another knapsack and put the rest in that one. Draco sat down by the fireplace, staring into the fire.
Harry wanted to thank him, but thought against it. He didnt want Draco to know they were in good terms with each other. Harry walked to the bathroom that Draco pointed out.
It was weird. Draco spoke out.
What?
Its like you couldnt wake up and you were talking in your sleep. Draco explained.
Did you hear anything?
Not really.
Okay, Harry entered the bathroom, sighing in relief.
After his shower, Harry rummaged through his knapsack, checking if all of his belongings were inside. He pulled out his pants and a photo fell out from the back pocket. It was a picture of Ginny, smiling and waving in the backyard of the Burrows. He had forgotten Ginny had given him a picture during their time together at Hogwarts. He kept it close to him wherever he went. Harrys heart usually leaped for joy every time he stared at it and he could almost smell her scent of flowers, but, now, his heart was in turmoil and her scent was very faint.
Harry stepped back into the living room, but he felt a cold chill run down his spine. The room was completely dark. The curtains were closed over the windows and the furniture was laying against the front door. Harry felt someone grasp his hand.
What are you doing, Malfoy? Harry questioned, sharply.
Draco didnt reply and led him upstairs. Harry was forced into one of the rooms and Draco pushed him on the bed.
What the hell, Malfoy? Harry protested as Draco locked the door. What are you doing?
Draco slowly walked toward the bed, standing over him. Harry pushed himself back farther into the bed. He stared up at Draco, but his face was solemn. Look outside.
Harry got off the bed, following Draco to one of the windows. He looked outside and to his horror he watched the isolated town being engulfed in flames. The Dark Mark was looming overhead. Harry witnessed the civilians running and getting zapped by Death Eaters.
We need to help them. Harry said, moving away from the window.
We cant. Draco quietly said.
What?
We are surrounded. Draco pointed out the Death Eaters, standing by the front door.
How did they manage to find the place?
Mrs. Grey. Draco whispered, sadly.
Harry remembered the woman screaming from his nightmares. Voldemort has captured her. He began to pace in the room, thinking of a plan to get out of the cabin. Why havent they barged in yet? What are they waiting?
Whoever is coming down the path. Draco kept staring out the window.
Harry saw two hooded Death Eaters, stopping in front of the door. In one blast, the door opened, destroying the furniture. All of the Death Eaters, except for two, ran inside the cabin.
Potter, come out, come out wherever you are.
Malfoy, we need to get out here. Harry ordered.
Draco lowered his head in defeat and sat on the bed. Its no use. Theyre here.
You are useless, Malfoy, Harry strapped on his knapsack and opened the window.
What are you doing?
I am not the type of person who gives up and lets evil win. Harry stated. I am jumping with or without you.
You cant they could see you.
Dont be such a coward, Harry taunted him. Dont you want to save your mother?
My mother?
Yes, your mother, who, for some unknown reason, you care so much about.
Draco slipped his knapsack over his back with determination and followed Harry.
Harry looked down and saw a Death Eater underneath the window. He waved his wand. Stupefy.
The Death Eater collapsed as his comrade approached him. Hey, wake up. This is not the time to sleep.
Harry fell on top of the distracted Death Eater, knocking him out cold. Harry instructed Draco to jump. He landed on top of the Death Eaters, breaking one of their wands. Harry gripped his hand and ran straight into the back woods.
Snape blasted the lock door of the bedroom. He saw the opened window and glanced outside. He angrily saw two of his comrades passed out. POTTER!.
Snapes voice reached Harrys ears, making him stop in his tracks. Snape, He gripped his wand, tightly. I need to go back.
Draco held him back. Are you crazy? You cant fight off a whole group of DeathEaters.
I dont care Snape needs to die. Harry stated.
Then they both heard rustling noises in the distance. I think I see something, Snape. The Death Eaters were catching up to them. If we zap our wands at the same time, we are bound to hit something.
Harry and Draco ran farther into the woods, dodging spells and curses. Draco tripped over some deadwood.
Shit! Draco cursed in pain. One of the spells grazed him on the leg.
Harry dragged Draco behind a large tree. Draco cried in agony, holding on to the cut on his leg.
Shut up, Harry whispered. They are going to hear you. Heavy footsteps were approaching the tree.
I smell blood. A husky voice spoke out.
You probably hit a deer, Greyback. Snape said.
No, Greyback breathed in the night air. I definitely hit a boy. Greyback happily said, trying to go around the tree, but Snape stopped him.
I said you hit a deer. Now, lets look in a different direction. Snape angrily stared down at his comrade. Greyback grumbled in disappointment, following Snape.
Harry waited until the footsteps were faint. He helped Draco up and ran the opposite direction from Snape and Greyback. Draco was slowing them down and Harry could hear footsteps, running towards them. The river was roaring ahead them and Harry thought about jumping in to lose the Death Eaters, but instead of the riverbank, they stood on a high cliff.
We need to jump, Harry said.
I cant. Draco clenched his teeth. My leg.
Ill help you, Harry put his arm around the Slytherins waist, throwing Dracos arm over his shoulder.
Snape, I see them. One of the Death Eaters yelled. Theyre trapped.
Before the Death Eaters could get any closer, Harry and Draco jumped off the cliff into the dark waters. Greyback was about to jump after them, but Snape ordered him to stop.
Its too dark, Snape waved his lit wand over the cliff. Lets go. The Dark Lord is waiting for us.
I am not going anywhere without Potters head. Greyback growled.
The Dark Lord already has all the information he needs. Snape looked at the other Death Eaters gathering around him. We now know those two are together. The Dark Lord would be very pleased.
